I am an art history grad student finding my way in New York City. Between studying and catching my breath, I like to see all the art I can - from museums, galleries to art fairs and artist studios. When I can be out and about in the art world, I try to keep a pretty close eye on what is going on in the art news.

YSL Auction Chaos

This crazy article about Yves St. Laurent has been ALL over the news. It’s insane. Who knew that people would care so much about the art collection of an eccentric old man. Christie’s is going ALL OUT on this auction with the (probable) hope that it lifts them out of the tough times of economic hardship.

The excitement is built in part, of course, around the fame of Mr. Saint Laurent, who represented a high point in French taste and in French eminence in the fashion world, which tends to be dominated these days by Italians and even, horrors, the British.

The latest news (not from this article) is that the Chinese government is looking for the repatriation of antiquities taken from China long long ago. We’ll see how that develops and if it taints the auction.
