A Film by Banksy
As someone keenly interested in the relationship of artists to institutions, the street artist Banksy is one of my favorite artists. His funny but often caustic stencils, graffiti, and installations have not only graced the streets of his home-town London, but also faraway locales, such as here in New York, or the more socially- and politically-charged locations of post-Katrina New Orleans, or the wall separating the Israeli-Palestinian border. In addition to this amazing street art, some of my favorite work by Banksy are his sneaky bequests to museum collections: in full sleuth garb of a hat, fake beard and trench coat, the artist puts up paintings or objects into a museum when bored and tired museum guards aren’t paying attention. Some works are discovered and removed within a few hours; some are up on the walls a few days; some, such as a rat in a glass case installed in the American Museum of Natural in New York, was proudly added to the permanent collection.
While recently visiting the artist’s website, I discovered one of his lesser known works: it appears Banksy is experimenting with the medium of film, with compelling results. Check out Banky’s film on his website.
